Murray Edwards College: The Women's Art Collection

Guided Visit to the Women's Art Collection at Murray Edwards College

Murray Edwards college, formerly New Hall, Cambridge has the largest collection of women’s art in Europe! Founded in the early 1990s, the collection includes works by leading artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Paula Rego, Lubaina Himid, Faith Ringgold, Tracey Emin and Cindy Sherman.

The Collection challenges the underrepresentation of women artists in museums and galleries. We will also see the current exhibition entitled The Sleepers, which explores how women artists have articulated complex and differing experiences of sleep and rest, to explore family, health and work. This exhibition brings together a century of works across a variety of mediums: paintings, prints and textiles, including a collaborative quilt.

We will meet at 10.30 for our guided tour.

Free parking is available at the College. The entrance is off Storey’s Way – just past Churchill at the bend as the road goes round to the left.  If you are using SatNav, CB3 0DR will guide you to the car park entrance. If the barrier is down, just press the speaker button & tell the porters that you are on the art tour and they will lift it for you. There is a link to the College plan in our documents section, here. Please use Car Park 1, top left on the plan.

Pembroke College

Visit to Pembroke College, Cambridge

How to use a once-in-500-year opportunity

15 and 16 January 2026, 10.30 - 12noon

Founded in the fourteenth century, by 2005 Pembroke College was bursting at the seams. However, around that time, a series of real estate and financial opportunities provided the chance to create the largest expansion of the college buildings since Tudor times.

Chris Blencowe (our Treasurer) was closely involved in this development and has agreed to take two small groups (8 maximum) around the new site on 15 and 16 January 2026 between 10.30 and noon. Chris will explain how the project evolved, what happened during the planning process and what has been delivered by this significant Cambridge development.

The Shuttleworth Collection

Join us on Wednesday 21st May at 10.30am for a truly memorable visit to this amazing collection of aircraft and the quirky Swiss Garden.

We will have a guided tour through this treasure trove of early 20th-century aircraft and wonder at the bravery of the pilots who actually dared to climb into these structures of skinny struts and stretched canvas. With many interactive sites we can actually meet the pilots whose story is being told.

After visiting the bistro for a light lunch, the afternoon is free to explore the Swiss Garden.

Which corner of this quirky garden will be claimed as your favourite? Will it be the brightly decorated Indian Kiosk? Or the tiny thatched Swiss Cottage? Perhaps the Grotto with its tunnel of artificial volcanic-style rock?

There is plenty of free parking available on the site. We encourage members to car-share if possible.

The cost of the tour is £25 per person. To reserve your place, please book by sending an email to irena@themilloys.co.uk stating how many places are required.

His body was found in 1999 about 2000ft below the summit. Mallory studied at Magdalene and the exhibition in the Cripps Gallery contains material from the college archive which reflects on his life and career.

Grimsthorpe Castle

This visit is arranged in conjunction with the Arts Societies CANTAB and South Cambs. The lead society is South Cambs.

The term ‘castle’ has been attached to the building at Grimsthorpe for around 800 years, even though today it is clear to visitors that the building is really a large country house. The castle has been in the Willoughby de Eresby family for 500 years. It was granted by Henry VIII to William, Baron Willoughby de Eresby on the occasion of his marriage to Maria de Salinas, lady-in-waiting to Katherine of Aragon in 1516. The oldest part of the castle, King John’s Tower, was built in the early 13th century. It is the main front which gives the castle its grandeur and dramatic scale. The final masterpiece of Sir John Vanbrugh, architect of Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard, it was commissioned in 1715 by Robert Bertie, Baron Willoughby de Eresby, to celebrate the family’s elevation to Dukes of Ancaster and Kesteven.

We will have a guided tour of the house, and there will be ample time for you to explore the extensive grounds at your leisure.

Voewood House and Castle Acre

This visit is arranged in conjunction with the Arts Societies CANTAB and South Cambs. The lead society is South Cambs.

Voewood is one of the great architectural expressions of the Arts & Crafts movement and one of the most important houses of the period in England.

Designed by architect Edward Schroeder Prior, Voewood was built between 1903 and 1905 for the Reverend Percy Lloyd and his family. The house grew organically, built in materials quarried from the land on which it stands, a rich tapestry of flint pebbles, gravel and stone. The excavated site was used to create the sunken garden that stretches across the property's south front.

Previously known as 'Home Place' Voewood has had many incarnations including a First World War army hospital, a school and a home for the elderly. Current owner Simon Finch fell for Voewood in 1998 and spent 7 years restoring the house to reveal the decorative beauty of the architecture.  He returned the house to a private home, as originally intended by Prior.

Harlaxton Manor was built in 1837 in an extraordinarily exuberant combination of styles – Gothic, Elizabethan, Jocobean and Baroque. Few houses in the country can match the splendid approach to Harlaxton. A straight mile long drive across a bridge, under a gatehouse, past 'the pyrotechnic display of the forecourt gates and screen' to the towering facade is in itself a memorable experience.

We will have a guided tour of the house and gardens. Highlights of the latter include French-style terraces, an Italian Garden, a Dutch ornamental canal, and English landscape walks. The Conservatory is virtually unique in the design and use of architectural elements. The 6.5 acre walled garden is one of the largest in Britain. The cost of the trip is £50 per person.

Schedule:
08:15                     Coach departs Trumpington Park and Ride

Eton College and Dorney Hall

This visit is arranged by The Arts Society Cantab in conjunction with the Arts Societies Granta and South Cambs. The lead society is Cantab.

Windsor
Contact: Elfrida Heath (Cantab)

ETON COLLEGE, founded in 1440 by Henry V1 is one of the oldest and best known schools in the country.  Within Eton's walls, a collegiate calm prevails. The chapel, a masterpiece of the perpendicular style, was raised 4m (13ft) above the ground to escape floods.  It was here in 1847 that 15th-century wall paintings were found three centuries after the college barber had whitewashed over them!
Top hats were doffed for the last time in 1940 but Eton College boys still wear blacktail coats dating from 1850 and pin-striped trousers from around 1900.  There are about 1,300 boys at Eton, all boarders.  A rich medley of uniforms can be spotted among Eton pupils. We will be there in term time.
We arrive at approximately 11am for coffee at 11.30 before the tours of the chapel and the library take place. We will be divided into two groups with a guide for each to give a personal tour of both the chapel and the library.  Each tour takes about three quarters of an hour.
After this, I suggest we have a late lunch (about 2pm) of soup and bread at Dorney Court restaurant where the coach will take us after Eton.

DORNEY COURT is considered “one of the finest Tudor Manor Houses in England”. We will get an insight into the lifestyle of the Palmer family who still live there today after 550 years! The tours (two for our group) take a good hour to see the Great Hall, family portraits, the furniture, panelled rooms and the 13th Century Church and Norman font.

We can then return to the restaurant for tea before returning to Cambridge at approximately 4.30. We should get back to Cambridge by 6.30pm.

TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
Meet at TRUMPINGTON  PARK and RIDE by 8.45 ( it takes 15 minutes to complete the parking payment and it can be done online before the trip). The coach leaves at 9.15am and returns by 6.30.
COST £35 p.p.
